ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY - PROFILE

In August 2000 the Environmental Laboratory became a participant of the Florida Healthy Beaches Program. The Environmental Laboratory assists the state Department of Environmental Protection and county health departments in determining if and when health advisories or warnings are necessary when high concentration of bacteria are present which may cause disease, infection or rashes. As a part of the program the Environmental Laboratory routinely tests beach-water samples for fecal coliform and enterococci bacteria.

Harbor Branch's laboratory capabilities have not been confined to the utility or marine environment. When raw sewage spilled into the Indian River in 1999, the laboratory provided daily results to local and state agencies. These agencies closed local recreational areas until the threat of contamination disappeared, and the laboratory helped determine when that threat was passed.

Over the years, the laboratory has developed a reputation as a dependable, quality provider of analytical services for drinking water and wastewater utilities thus helping to ensure that everyone has safe water to drink and the impact to our environment is minimized.
